"with the visual excess of an explosion or a crash," - David Ryan / Artpapers
"Jaime Gili reconfigures the essence of the moment with an explosion" - Sacha Craddock
Jaime Gili was born in Caracas in 1972. Growing up in a capital full of kinetic art, cement and optimism. This city in the seventies had its own version of modernism in art and architecture: a unique vision of utopia. Caracas seemed a city created by artists and architects working together, all lubricated with the recently nationalized oil wealth.
Jaime began studying at Prodiseño, Caracas in 1988, seeing the beginning of the gradual meltdown of the great institutions of the country and much of the public art and much of the architecture of the city. Upon arrival in Europe in the '90s, lived and studied in Barcelona where, after completing his degree, he continued with a PhD at the University of Barcelona. His thesis was on Repeat and Serial. He also spent periods in Lisbon, Paris and Berlin. Since 1996 lives in London, where he arrived to study a Masters (MA) at the Royal College of Art, which came out in 1998.
Gili currently develops his paintings trying to make sense in the new context of these modern movements in history, like rising to the present positive elements to remember the energy that has been nurtured as an artist. His penultimate series of paintings, explosive and dynamic distinctive forms, reminiscent of the best moments of modern abstraction, but they seem to exist at the time of utopia and reality collide.
Since 2006, Jaime Gili has made several interventions in public space, including the largest public paintings ever made, over 16 industrial storage tanks in Portland, USA and work for low-income neighborhood in Caracas, his hometown.
His work is represented in international collections including Banco Mercantil, Caracas, Saatchi Gallery, London. Jaime is regularly invited to give classes and lectures in English Universities, Venezuelan, and Spanish. It is part of the advisory board of CIFO, Miami, and has been a collaborator of the magazine from London LAPIZ.
